  • SQL Security Patch Build is CU6+ but not quite CU7

So as suspected when I installed the new Security patch released by Microsoft for SQL 2005 sp2 that I mentioned this morning my build number has indeed shot up to 3233.  This places me somewhere between CU6 and CU7. Build 9.00.3228 was CU6 and 9.00.3239 is CU7. So just bear in mind that when you plop on your patch you are actually taking a ...

  • Filesystem access from Flash Player 10

I was very surprised when I heard this. During these years Adobe (formerly Macromedia) tried their best to keep the Flash Player sendbox well separated by the filesystem. So I thought, especially after the introduction of AIR, that it would have been stayed like this for a long time. Instead with Flash Player 10 is now possible to ...

  • Prehistoric bureacracy drags £300m of taxpayer cash into the tarpit

Last week's failure of the HMRC to undertake basic steps to protect the data of some 25m-odd British citizens is a classic case of how IT by itself is of no value at all. All the retinal scanning in the world is of no use if it's not actually employed. We're the tail end of a cultural revolution right now -- moving into a true ...

  • Inhibitors to buying online #2 – Financial Services

Inhibitors to buying online #2 – Financial Services  Rizwan points out a revealing survey from Forrester as to why consumers do not buy products and services online. The post is set in the context of tangible – clothes, books, groceries etc. but it’s interesting how the research resounds in the world of intangibles such ...

  • Configuring DCOM Security

This post started out as a comment on one of Jamie's recent posts, however, I realised that the explanation would be easier to follow with screenshots... so here we go. To paraphrase, Jamie's issue was that whilst trying to use an SSIS package he was getting a DCOM access denied error (full details here) - this had worked in previous ...

  • SSIS: Storing passwords

Many questions on the SSIS forum relate to security aspects of using SSIS and a large percentage of those relate to the storing of passwords in configurations. Many people have correctly observed that, whilst SSIS will generate configuration files for you, it will not include passwords, instead leaving them blank. The reason is simple, ...

  • Key Usage, PKI and Cisco Devices

A colleague and I had some fun recently troubleshooting an issue regarding digital certificates and a Cisco ASA. I thought it would be useful to document the steps taken to resolve the issue as they can be applied to other circumstances when dealing with Windows 2003 PKI and non-Windows devices. In order to set up WebVPN (essentially SSL VPN ...
