TechEd2007: Orcas and Katmai = Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008

Well, we just came out of the keynote session at TechEd 2007.  One thing I noticed during the keynote is that the products are being to as Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 (instead of Orcas and Katmai respectively).

New stuff I've heard so far of interest to me:

  • Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Server 2008 are confirmed to be released later this year.
  • SQL Server 2008 will follow next year.
  • Windows Server 2008 "Core" will include IIS7 as one of the available roles.
  • New virtualisation technology codenamed "Viridian" for Windows Server 2008 (including a very cool Virtual Machine Manager and support for migrating physical and VMWare machines) will follow 6 months after release of Windows Server 2008.
