Vodafone v1415 - AKA VDA V & HTC Vox

Yes!!! Yes!!! Yes!!!

Finally Vodafone are keeping up with the pace, with the release of the v1415, HTC's Vox. It's a great device that has all the features of a CoolSmartPhone with the added excellence of a slide out keyboard...

It's got Bluetooth, it's got WiFi and the largest Smartphone, 2.4", screen that rotates when you open the keyboard. Best of all it's a Windows Mobile 6 device! YEAH!!!

It's not bad looking either, even my misses asked me what I was when I had a go at one a month or so ago...

As for the way the phone runs way better than the v1240!!!

Good work Voda

EDITED: Opps , it's v1415 not 10... Bad Keni :)

Good question, I'd say around June time... I'd also expect to pay about the same price as the current Orange version...

How does it compare to the v1605? I've been told by voda that I can upgrade to any phone I want for free, I was pretty sure I was going to get the 1605 but the idea of having a WM6 device is quite appealing.

Actually, I've just answered my own question by looking here: http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer I think the lack of touchscreen and slower processor on the 1415 makes the 1605 a more attractive proposition.

I see what your saying on first glance, but you have to remember that the ARM v4 instuction set is not as fast as the v5. (I feel a blog post coming on)

Plus the 1415 is a Windows Mobile - Standard (Smartphone) so it's unfair to judge it as it's not like for like...

O and the link to compare is them should work now...

I've got one and it looks and feels good. However, I cannot get it to sync 'both' wirelessly and with a cable to my Exchange Server and Outlook. When not connected to the PC via USB it syncs beautifully, but when I connect with a cable it cannot get to my exchange server as it is 'inside' our firewall. The HP iPaq I borrowed from Vodaphone did this without any hassle. Anyone any thoughts

It sounds like to me that you are missing the Pass through settings on Device Center (ActiveSync)

David Smith said:

Keni, thanks for your rapid response. Yes, I probably am missing this ... but I'm not sure how/where this is set up. We use OWA with our ISP pointing an address, of the form "http://mail.domainname.com/exchange" to our router and this works well for both PC access and with this phone. However, we cannot get to this address internally and if we want to use OWA internally (eg when staff are not at their normal office lcoation) we use 'http://server.domain.local/exchange". Telling the phone to use this latter address allows synching with the users Outlook but am i doing something stupid? Any help would be much appreciated. regards David

Notes can't be Over the Air sync'd. This is by design.

How ever you can sync them via your PC and a USB or Bluetooth connection...

Keni, thanks for the reply, but I am syncing with USB. I am trying to transfer notes from my PC outlook to the phone. The only option I have is to sync them through "files" but the phone won't open them as it does not know what application to use. Hmmm!? I have not tried to sync notes from phone to PC yet. I love the phone so far though. Eddie

Eddie said:

Keni, I just phoned HTC who make the handset and they said it is not possible to sync notes - period. That is extremely poor. So I have found a dodge; transfer the notes on the PC to "tasks" and they sink fine as tasks. I will just have to remember to always use tasks instead of notes. I have previously used the more powerful phone-PDA devices that work well, but are big. This smartphone does enough (including receiving and syncing all my emails) and I can easily carry it my pocket. I don't need the big brick now. Eddie

Have a read of Mark's blog (say hi from me) and play around with it... Mobile and PC syncing of notes... Plus... And this is the best bit... If you have a Tablet, I do (SHOW OFF - ED), then you can hand write!!! Sweet...

I've just ordered one. I'm not very technical, but I've bought it hoping to finally have a phone that can usefully be linked to my outlook calender. Sounds like this is do-able Quick question though, what would i need to buy to turn it into a tom-tom style navigating device? I guess it would be a gps receiver and software package. Any recommendations? What should i expect to pay? Sorry, that's 3 questions

You certainly can... I'd buy TomTom not sure what the price is now a days...

You need the one that comes with a Bluetooth GPS unit and a MicroSD card...

If you have any other questions, read the other blogs, might find answer there or just get in touch...

Interesting comments. I have a v1605 (had - it got smashed by someone angry...not me), and minus my gripes, I LOVED it. Gripes: - Too large (& somewhat ugly) - Quite heavy - HORRIBLE BATTERY TIME (fully charged in the morning, it would barely last until mid-afternoon!) Now, I like the sound of the v1415, but as pointed out earlier, it is not the same OS as the v1605. I 'need' the Pocket PC version (v1605) as I use the extra functions like touchscreen (ever tried to cut-n-paste without a touch screen?!) and certain 3d party app's are either not available on Smartphone OS, or come with restricted functionality. So, my question to the group is: What's next if I want to upgrade from the v1605? Thoughts on the HTC Kaiser (steriod version of v1605) http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=733 Rumored release in Aug/Sept More interestingly for we who could get a 'free upgrade' by re-signing with Voda... does anyone know if this device is planned for the Vodafone line-up? Thanks! Erik

My MD is trialing the V1415 and has a problem. He can sync Outlook just fine when connected via USB cable, the problem is when he unplugs the USB cable the phone doesnt automatically revert to GPRS for syncing. He has to manually change it in the Connection setting. Is there a way around this? He is happy to work around it but our customers won't be.

That should fix it as with many things in Vista there is a new way of doing things... The Mobile Device Center is a step in the right direction from MS and will enable more customisation by Telco's too...

But for us, better usability for a start... :)

I've just bought a V1415 and I am assuming, naively, that I will be able to get it woking into my wireless Belkin router which includes an ADSL2 modem. What my main concern is how do I connect it into my 2007 CLK (W209) which is fitted for telphone which will allow you to make and accept calls from the multi-function steering wheel. There is a Bluetooth SAP adaptor type A204 820 0535 which might work. Any advice or could you indicate how I might find out? The trouble with Mercedes is that they are about a year behind the times, but I thought Bluetooth was meant to overcome all these interface issues.

This is a current issue with Bluetooth adaptors in cars... It's all down to the Buetooth profiles that both the phone and the car support... I don't have the CLK's supported profiles to hand, but this is a common question now... Plus I'm thinking of having one installed in my machine too... I think this warrants some reasearch and a new post... Watch this space.

Hi had my V1415 a few weeks now and pretty happy with it and have almost retired my trusted Ipaq 4150...almost.... WM6 is throwing me a few curve balls. When I tried to looad on the tomtom bluetooth drivers for my wireless bluetooth GPS unit (latest drivers I could find on tomtom's site) it says that it isn't supported on the intended device. I have also tried to get some GNU media players on and they won't load either (including realplayer). On the nright side I did buy a 6Gb sandisk microSD card which works really well.

Do you know if I'm suffering a problem with Vodafones implementation or if I'm hitting general WM6 issues.

Any help given would be gratefully received.

Hi I have had my V1415 for a month or so and I am having problems booting up - wondering if anyone else does. twice now, when you go to turn on it doesn't boot properly and the only way to stop the endless circle is to take the battery out. However if I remove the SIM then turn on - it will boot up normally (obviously the device is then useless as a phone but great as a PDA!). Occassionally it will miraculously boot up with Sim but then won't find service? I thought the only way around this was to never turn it off - but then yesterday it just lost service and it wouldn't return! I have put no additional software on it - have only synched my outlook data so far. I am reluctant to do a hard reboot cause of the data loss issues? Any hints?

Hi all, I've just got my new v1415 and it seems pretty good. However, in order to transfer my contacts from my old Nokia, I first synchronised them to outlook then synchronised outlook with the v1415. The names arrived but not the numbers. Can anyone help? Also, I'd like to use an mp3 for my text message alerts. Is this possible? It seems I can use an mp3 for my ringtone but not for texts. Thanks

Hi All

I've just handed in a brick of a Nokia E61 for a V1415.

Delighted so far.

But....

With the E61 came a software suite that enabled me to create a text message on my laptop then send it via bluetooth as a standard SMS from the E61. This sounds trivial but when you've hands like hams it did make life easy.

Question....

Is there a similar PC based utility for the V1415 ?

Cheers.
