WinFS lives!

I listen to a lot of podcast series these days (a great way of filling up my one hour train commute) and I've recently subscribed to Perspectives with Jon Udell.

This morning I listened to his latest one Where is WinFS now? which featured an interview with Quentin Clark from the SQL Server team. Quentin was prominent on the supposedly ill-fated WinFS project but in actual fact he explains how a lot of the technologies developed as part of WinFS have manifested themselves in released technologies today. Entity Framework, HierarchyID data type & Filestream are all set to be released in the next three or four months and all were incubated in WinFS.

Well worth a listen if you like understanding how and where technologies originate.

Jamie,

I listen to a lot of tech podcasts too...If you haven't listed them before, I'd be curious to hear which ones you and our peers recommend...

Hi Jon,

I don't listen to many SQL ones to be honest (probably because their aren't that many). I subscribe to Greg Lowe's "SQL Down Under" and Buck Woody's "Real World DBA".

Everything else is just geeky stuff:

Factcompany.tv  (which is basically Robert Scoble)

Tech Weekly from The Guardian

The Gillmor Gang (a bit pompous but still interesting)

Channel 10

Channel 9

Perspectives (as mentioned above)

Technet Radio (rarely anything worth listening to on that)

hanselminutes (not really my sort of thing but I susbscribe in case something interesting comes up)

Digital Lifestyle

What about yourself? I'm always on the lookout for new stuff.

Thanks for the list.

You're right... I'm always on the lookout for SQL-centric podcasts and there just aren't very many out there -- and I'm constantly searching... I just started subscribing to sql down under too...

However, my recent favorite is the SSWUG.org webcast. Best thing about it is that it he uses the same framework each time, so each week, I know what to expect:

A few of the topics:

Hot threads on their message board that week

News and Notes in the industry (Any mergers or new DB or BI offerings etc.)

Upcoming Tech conferences (U.S.-centric)

General DBA tips.

I too, subscribe to Technet Radio, but I completely agree with you. The rest of the tech stuff I subscribe to is mostly garbage.

As for music : I highly recommend anything off of KEXP.org out of Seattle, which, IMHO, sets the standard for Indie Rock radio stations in the States.
