Zune thought...

Zune is way behind iPod in the mp3-player game so they need a USP to help them compete - track sharing over wifi hasn't helped them yet. So, here's an idea for them (and for the iPod crew come to that) - how about doing the same for books that has been done for music? Let people purchase a book digitally and download it to their handheld gadget. Greenpeace would be happy too.

You heard it here first! [Although Mike Torres gave me the idea - in fact he will probably quite rightly claim it as his idea :)]

Good idea Jamie.  Plus recent experience of their dodgy marketplace data has made me think they need to pay attention to their offerings. H.

Books, as in books you read? Because you can play audiobooks fine on your iPod.

Reading a book on the screens a zune or ipode offer, at least right now, would be near impossible as your eyes would tire far too quickly.

David,

You think? I guess I'm no expert in the field. You may be right.

I use my Windows Mobile phone (a Samsung i730 with a 2 1/2" screen) to read eBooks on a regular basis. It's not perfect, but it is definitely usable. Adding it to the Zune would make sense.

Good thought - there are a lot of ebooks already - check out ebooks.com - Microsoft have had a reader for sometime - http://www.microsoft.com/reader/default.mspx - perhaps this will find it's way onto the Zune.

I had thought Apple were doing something in this space with the iphone too ? Biggest blocker to adoption for me is the tangibility of books - you can read them in any light, with no battery, and pass them one - one to overcome perhaps ?

There are numerous studies why screen reading on a fixed area (none bendable, hard to tilt) tires the muscles, especially the one for lateral motion, more than actually reading a book. Apparently this has also to do with the fact that we like to quickly shift motion and the tangibility of the object "book".

I know I cannot read on a screen for very long, I do not think I am special when it comes to that. The screen of my 5th generation IPod is way too small to read a full book on it, especially with all the scrolling that would be involved.

But that is just me :)
