I am currently on holiday until 13th October so comments are disabled until then. Feel free to use the "Email" link but don't expect an answer.

Conchango are busy and need top level Technical Architects for Microsoft & Open Source platforms in and around London. Interested? Email me or send me a message

SSIS: Location for your package templates

Phillipe Cand asked me recently where you should put your SSIS templates so that you can use them as the basis for your packages. The answer is:

%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7 \IDE\PrivateAssemblies\ProjectItems\DataTransformationProject\DataTransformationItems

Once you have them there you can right-click on a project in BIDS and select "New Item...". Your template should be available.

Any problems, let me know!

There's also a "Visual Studio user project templates" directory in the Options | Projects and Solutions pane, with a user specific directory, sounds like that might be an appropriate place too depending on your needs...

NK,

I don't have my own template per se. The contents of templates that I use are defined by the requirements of the project that I am currently working on. There is no "one size fits all".

Maybe one day I'll look to build a very generic template that builds on my suggested best practices: http://blogs.conchango.com/jamiethomson/archive/2006/01/05/SSIS_3A00_-Suggested-Best-Practices-and-naming-conventions.aspx

Yeah that's great but saving templates on your local machine is hardly multiple developer (team environment) friendly. The Visual Studio templates location option doesn't seem to apply to BIDS either - is there a workaround??

SS,

Afraid not. The templating function in BIDS is sadly lacking I'm afraid.
