Blogging this one as a reminder to myself, and in the hope that it might help someone out.
Visual Studio 2005, by default doesn't show the solution node in solution explorer if the solution only has one project.
To display the solution node bring up options Tools->Options, under the Projects and Solutions node, on the General page, check the 'Always show solution' box.
