Colour me Secure

Hi All,

My third blog post, I am on a roll.

I was at a cleint recently where a "Creative" was having a debate about what colour signifies Security to them. He wanted to colour the header and footer of the secure shopping cart part of the site green to signal security, however I pitched my oar in and mentioned I thinking in terms of online retailing the colour yellow signifies secure, as it is used in Mozilla and various other browsers to show a secure site, and I think customers are used to this fact. He disagreed, so I would like to know off you guys out there:

What colour do you think best signifies Security or being in a Secure Area within a site?

Cheers

Its so yellow! Yellow is the colour for hazard, caution and warning signs. Its also the colour of the packaging for Norton Utilities. I rest my case.

Yellow? The sign for hazard signs, caution and warning signs? I rest my case (i.e. not!) - it's also a colour proven to send people psychopathic if exposed to it for a long period of time (famous experiment in a US prison years ago).

Green? Colour of the address bar in IE when a site is safe. Red = not safe. Maybe...

Blue? IBM, Microsoft, the deep blue sea... not sure.

Brown? Earth, mud, coffee, looks black online... hmmm.

Magnolia? Colour guaranteed not to offend. The colour people paint their walls before they sell their house in order to not put people off and therefore make more money on the sale... So, Magnolia signifies profit / saving money, etc. and therefore is the best colour for a checkout! I rest my case. Magnolia is the future for online security. I expect Norton, RSA, Microsoft and Cisco to change their corporate branding immediately!!

I always thought yellow was for either cowardice (yellow belly) or as a sign your missing someone (tie a yellow ribbon).

Red - definitely not safe. Danger!

I think Green for Go.

US Homeland security start at Green and work up from there to Blue, Yellow, Orange and Red

In the offline world, grey often has connotations with security, but  for me can often mean lack of imagination, nondescript, dull and 'playing it safe'.  People often say it is the new black, but then they said that a few years about beige and whatever happened to THAT!

How about gold? It's not yellow and could signify wealth, safety.  Don't forget the cultural implications:

Red in China signifies happiness

Pink in Korea signifies trust

Brown has been known to reduce sales in Columbia

Yellow is the colour of mourning in Egypt, but it is blue in Iran and purple in Thailand
